Print off this list of around two thousand common English words and phrases, then give a copy to your students who, working in small groups over a period of time, can translate the whole list into their first language. Give them plenty of time to do the translation, and give them loads of help with words that they don't know. Apart from being an interesting and valuable group project, you will be able to photocopy the dictionaries and give copies to the students when they are finished, as well as keep copies that you can use with future classes.
